Paetongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party and chairwoman of the National Committee on Soft Power Development, is supporting efforts to push for a law recognizing transgender people by 2030. This initiative is part of Thailand’s bid to host World Pride.

Ms. Paetongtarn made this announcement at an event launching this year’s Pride Month festival, which will run from May 31 through June. The event was held at Siam Discovery shopping center on Tuesday.

She noted that the bill on gender recognition and transgender rights, proposed by the main opposition Move Forward Party, was voted down on February 21. The bill was rejected by a vote of 256 to 152, with one abstention.

During the House debate, several MPs deemed the bill’s content as “extreme” and openly opposed it.

Pheu Thai has long been committed to promoting equality for all, she emphasized. The Thai Rak Thai Party, which evolved into the People Power Party and eventually Pheu Thai, has historically campaigned for better recognition of LGBTQ+ rights.

She also highlighted that on March 27, the Pheu Thai-led government successfully pushed for the marriage equality law to pass in the House of Representatives. The law is expected to receive final approval from the Senate and be enacted later this year. Additionally, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau plans to bid for the right to host World Pride 2030.

Saruntorn Asaves of Siam Piwat Co, the operator of Siam Discovery, announced that a wide range of events are planned for next month.

Ferrari has made significant strides in bolstering its team for the upcoming 2025 Formula 1 season by recruiting two high-profile members from rival Mercedes. Jerome d’Ambrosio and Loic Serra will be joining the Scuderia, marking a notable shift in F1 personnel dynamics.

Jerome d’Ambrosio Joins Ferrari: Ferrari confirmed on Monday that Jerome d’Ambrosio will take on the role of Deputy Team Principal and Head of the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy. The 38-year-old Belgian, a former F1 driver who competed in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, will be leaving his position as head of Mercedes’ young driver program to join Ferrari in October.

Loic Serra’s New Role: In another strategic move, Ferrari has appointed Loic Serra as Head of Chassis Performance Engineering. Serra, who has been with Mercedes since 2013 and served as their performance director since 2018, will also start his new role in October.

Additional Changes: Ferrari has also announced that Bryan Bozzi will replace Xavi Marcos as race engineer for Charles Leclerc, further strengthening their technical team.

Haas Lawsuit Against Former Team Principal

Haas is embroiled in a legal battle with its former team principal, Guenther Steiner, following his departure from the team. Steiner, who led Haas from 2016 to 2023, is being sued by the team over issues related to non-payment of commissions and unauthorized use of trademarks.

Details of the Lawsuit: The conflict arose after Steiner, known for his appearances on Netflix’s “Drive to Survive,” took Haas to court over unpaid commissions he claims he is owed. In retaliation, Haas has sued Steiner and the publishing company Ten Speed Press, alleging unauthorized use of Haas Automation trademarks for personal gain in Steiner’s book, “Surviving to Drive,” published in 2023.

The legal dispute underscores the often tumultuous relationships within F1 teams and the complexities of managing high-stakes motorsport operations.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has likened his team’s final Premier League match of the season to serving for Wimbledon. After a 2-0 victory over Tottenham on Tuesday night, City are now two points clear of Arsenal and in control of their own destiny. They will clinch a record fourth consecutive league title if they defeat West Ham at home on the final day of the season this Sunday (16:00 BST).

Guardiola drew a parallel to tennis, stating, “The tennis players say ‘the serve to win Wimbledon’, the last game, is the most difficult one.” He emphasized the pressure and significance of this final match, adding, “We know what we’re playing for. The tension is there.”

City have a strong track record when the title race goes down to the wire, having been involved in the final day title deciders nine times in the Premier League era, winning each of the last four occasions. According to analysts Opta, Guardiola’s side have an 84% chance of lifting the trophy, and historically, no team that has started the final day in second place has ended it as champions.

Guardiola called for fan support, saying, “Everyone come to the stadium and make noise. We’ll have one day off, two days to prepare, and then we will do our best.”

    Man City’s Final Day Heroics:

    • Manchester City 3-2 Queens Park Rangers (2011-12)
    • Manchester City 2-0 West Ham (2013-14)
    • Brighton 1-4 Manchester City (2018-19)
    • Manchester City 3-2 Aston Villa (2021-22)

Injury Updates: During the match against Tottenham, goalkeeper Ederson and star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne both suffered injuries and were substituted. Ederson had an issue with his eye, which impaired his vision, prompting Guardiola to make a change. Though visibly frustrated, his replacement, Stefan Ortega, performed admirably, making a crucial save against Spurs’ Son Heung-min.

De Bruyne picked up an ankle injury, but Guardiola did not provide further details on the extent of his condition.

A second South Korean suspect in the murder of a man found dead in a concrete-filled barrel near Pattaya has been arrested in Phnom Penh and is being handed over to Korean authorities.

Pol Maj Gen Noppasil Poonsawat, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, announced on Tuesday that Cambodian authorities had captured Lee Young Jin in the Cambodian capital on Monday.

Lee will be handed over to the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency in South Korea, he said.

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested at a lodging around midnight following a tip-off about his presence in the area, Yonhap news agency reported, citing unnamed officials.

He is the second suspect to be apprehended in this case, following the capture of Lee Roun, who is in his 20s, at his house in Jeongeup city in southwestern South Korea on Sunday after fleeing Thailand.

Thai and South Korean police are now searching for the third and final suspect, identified as Kim Hyeonng Won, who is believed to have crossed illegally into Myanmar from Thailand.

Pol Maj Gen Noppasil said arrest warrants would be issued for the three suspects on charges of premeditated murder, illegal detention, and concealing a body.

These charges are related to the murder of Roh Eui Jong, 34, whose body was discovered on Saturday in a plastic barrel dumped in Map Prachan reservoir on the outskirts of Pattaya in Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district on May 5.

The body was confirmed to be that of Roh Eui Jong on Tuesday through DNA comparison with samples from his father and elder sister, Pol Maj Gen Noppasil said. His sister also identified him from physical marks, including a scar.

Roh was reported missing on May 3 after arriving in Thailand on April 30. He was allegedly abducted by the three men in Bangkok. His mother sought help from the South Korean embassy in Thailand after receiving a LINE call demanding 3 million baht in ransom for his release.

The trio are also wanted by South Korean police investigating the same case.

According to Yonhap, the first detained suspect will be formally charged as an accessory to the crime rather than for murder. During questioning, he denied involvement in the actual murder.

Jailed activist Netiporn “Boong” Sanesangkhom, 28, was pronounced dead at Thammasat University Hospital late Tuesday morning, over three months after she had started a dry hunger strike.

Netiporn, a core leader of the Thalu Wang protest group, had been imprisoned at the Central Women’s Correctional Institution in Chatuchak district since Jan 26, having had her bail revoked in connection with a charge of lese-majeste.

She had been sentenced on the same day to one month behind bars for contempt of court in connection with a protest that turned into a scuffle with guards outside the Bangkok South Criminal Court on Oct 19, 2023. She and others had gone there to show support for another activist sentenced to jail for royal defamation under Section 112 of the Criminal Code.

The lese-majeste charge the former tutor was facing stemmed from her participation in an opinion survey on royal motorcades in February 2022. Her bail revocation was connected to a protest she staged at the Ministry of Culture on Aug 6, 2023.

The day after she was sent to prison, Netiporn began a hunger strike to demand reform of the justice system and an end to the imprisonment of people prosecuted for political cases.

As she refused food and water, as well as most medication and medical intervention, her condition gradually deteriorated and she was moved from the prison to the Central Correctional Hospital in early February. She was subsequently sent to Thammasat University Hospital for more treatment before being transferred back to the prison hospital.

In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the Department of Corrections said that after Netiporn returned to the prison hospital, she started taking food and water normally.

According to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR), Netiporn was taken back to the prison hospital in early April. The department did not specify when she began consuming food and water again.

However, she was suffering from weakness and slightly swollen legs, anaemia and low minerals. She also refused to take minerals and medication for her blood, it said.

Netiporn had a heart attack at the Central Correctional Hospital just after 6am on Tuesday, the department said. Doctors immediately began resuscitation attempts and arranged for her to be taken to Thammasat University Hospital. She arrived there at 9.30am and was pronounced dead at 11.22am.

Move Forward Party MP Rukchanok Srinork, who is currently free on bail while she appeals a six-year sentence for lese majeste and computer crimes, was among the first public figures to comment on the activist’s passing.

“I would like to express my condolences on the passing of Boong,” she wrote on her X account. “To demand the right to bail is a basic right that people should have while still fighting their case.”

Nattawut Saikuar, a former co-leader of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, called for the release of other detained youth activists.

“No one should die because they think differently,” he said.

Lawmakers for many months have been debating whether to grant an amnesty for people convicted of political offences dating back nearly two decades. While they are in general agreement on amnesty for those in the yellow- and red-shirt movements, there is considerable resistance to including people convicted under Section 112.

“Deaths like this wouldn’t have happened if the government had tried to do more and be more sincere,” said Lisa Nunarnan, a Move Forward MP and deputy spokesperson.

Two colleagues of Netiporn — Natthanon “Frank” Chaimahabud, and Tantawan “Tawan” Tuatulanon — are also continuing with their hunger strikes, though they reportedly have been accepting some liquids and medications.

They face a charge of sedition arising from an incident on Feb 4 during a motorcade carrying Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

According to data from TLHR to April 30 this year, 1,954 people have been prosecuted for political participation and expression since the beginning of the Free Youth protests in July 2020. At least 272 are facing lese-majeste charges under Section 112 and 152 have been charged with sedition under Section 116.

A district chief on Koh Pha Ngan island in Surat Thani province clarified that a viral video of sexual yoga circulating on Thai social media was filmed in Bali, Indonesia, not in Thailand.

The video, widely shared on May 13, showed three foreign couples engaged in explicit acts, initially claimed to have taken place in a yoga studio on Koh Pha Ngan. The men in the video, reportedly yoga instructors, appeared to engage in activities that seemed more sexual than yogic. Many netizens viewed the practices as being performed for sexual pleasure or orgasm rather than for health-related purposes. Concerns about the appropriateness of the activity led to calls for an investigation and the closure of the business involved.

One Thai man commented that the gestures were a form of yoga designed to treat depression. Another netizen identified the practice as tantric sex, or sexual yoga, which aims at liberation, spiritual or energetic connection, and mindful intimacy between partners. While some netizens found these explanations convincing, others continued to demand an investigation and public disclosure of the findings.

Noppadon Khaomali, the chief of Koh Pha Ngan district, told Channel 3 that he and other officials reviewed the video and determined it was recorded in Bali, Indonesia. He also presented a social media account belonging to one of the yoga instructors in the video, which featured similar yoga practices in Bali.

Noppadon reassured the public that Koh Pha Ngan authorities are vigilantly monitoring foreign behavior on the island and will take action against any inappropriate activities. He referenced the recent arrest of a Polish yoga teacher at the Tantra Movement School in March for operating without a license and offering questionable yoga classes.

The yet-to-be-titled film will follow Statham as Mason, a man living in seclusion on a remote Scottish island. His solitary existence is shattered when he rescues a young girl from the treacherous sea during a violent storm, triggering a series of events that lead to a brutal attack on his sanctuary. Forced to confront his haunting past, Mason must venture back into the world he left behind.

Scheduled to begin filming in November across the UK and Iceland, with filming services provided by Kormákur’s RVK Studios in Reykjavik, the script is penned by Ward Parry. The film will be produced by Statham for Punch Palace Productions, Kormákur for RVK Studios, John Friedberg for Black Bear, and Jon Berg and Greg Silverman for Stampede Ventures. Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler will serve as executive producers for Black Bear.

Statham, known for his action-packed performances, recently starred in “The Beekeeper,” directed by David Ayer, which grossed $150M worldwide. He is currently collaborating with Ayer on the action-thriller “Levon’s Trade” and is set to commence production on “Mutiny” with Jean-Francois Richet in September.

Black Bear’s Cannes market lineup includes David Michôd’s Christy Martin biopic, Gregg Araki’s thriller “I Want Your Sex” starring Olivia Wilde, and the high-profile Mahershala Ali-Tom Hardy thriller “77 Blackout,” produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga and Charles Roven.

John Friedberg of Black Bear expressed excitement about the collaboration, praising Statham’s action prowess and Kormákur’s dynamic filmmaking style. The team is eager to introduce audiences to the thrilling world of Michael Mason in this upcoming action franchise.

Director Guy Ritchie is set to immerse himself once again in the world of British aristocracy with his upcoming film “Wife and Dog.” According to exclusive reports from Variety, Ritchie is gearing up to start filming in October, marking a return to the setting reminiscent of his previous works such as “The Gentlemen” spinoff series.

Produced under the banner of Black Bear, the same company behind Ritchie’s recent projects like “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Sydney Sweeney’s “Immaculate,” “Wife and Dog” is expected to showcase Ritchie’s signature style of storytelling, blending action, comedy, and colorful characters.

While specific details about the film remain scarce, it’s anticipated to feature the same elements of intrigue, betrayal, and vibrant personalities that have become synonymous with Ritchie’s work. The cast is currently being kept under wraps, although reports suggest that negotiations are underway with several high-profile actors.

In addition to directing, Ritchie has also written the screenplay for “Wife and Dog” and will produce alongside his longtime collaborator Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. The project adds to Ritchie’s already busy schedule for 2024, which includes the release of “The Gentlemen” spinoff series and “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.”

Ritchie’s current endeavors also extend to other projects like “Fountain of Youth,” featuring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, and “In the Grey,” a heist action movie reuniting him with Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, and Eiza González. Lionsgate has expressed hopes for “In the Grey” to kickstart a potential franchise.

At Cannes Film Festival, “Wife and Dog” joins a lineup of highly anticipated projects seeking distribution deals, including David Michôd’s boxing biopic starring Sydney Sweeney and Olivia Wilde-led “I Want Your Sex” from Gregg Araki and Mahershala Ali. However, one of the most anticipated films drawing attention is Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” headlined by Adam Driver.
