BANGKOK, May 7 (TNA) – Today marks the second major rehearsal of the royal ploughing ceremony as the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is ensuring that all preparations are in place.

Scheduled for two days, the ceremony will begin on May 9 at the Temple of Emerald Buddha with the blessing ceremony for the rice and seeds to be used in the royal ploughing ceremony on the next day at the Sanam Luang ceremonial ground.

This year, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Prayoon Inskul performs as the Lord of Plough. He said that the ceremony is held to bring prosperity and blessings to Thai farmers. It is traditionally held in the sixth month of every year, a suitable time to begin rice cultivation.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is fully prepared to organize the ceremony, especially this year, in celebration of the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King’s 6th cycle birthday anniversary.

The rice seeds for the ceremony weigh a total of 2,743 kilograms and include six varieties. These seeds were sourced from fields in Suan Chitralada, Dusit Palace.

The two pairs of sacred oxen including one reserved pair were selected by the Department of Livestock Development for the ceremony. Both pairs are of the white Lumphun cattle breed, with white and pinkish skin, clean white fur, and majestic appearances.

The divination ceremony during the royal ceremony will predict the prosperity of the rice varieties in the country in two stages.

Firstly, the Lord of Plough will randomly select one piece of folded clothes, each of which has different length and predictions. After the plowing ceremony, the sacred oxen will be offered seven items to eat. The Royal Brahmins will then interpret their choices. -819 (TNA)

BANGKOK, May 3 (TNA) – A man died after falling into a 15-meter tube well on the median strip of Ladprao Road in Bangkok.

Rescue teams quickly responded to the incident, retrieving the man’s body from the 15-meter-deep well, equivalent to the height of a 2-3-story building.

Witnesses recounted that the man, approximately 170 centimeters tall, fell into the well while attempting to cross the road to the market near Soi Ladprao 49.

Despite efforts to help, the depth of the well and lack of equipment hindered rescue attempts. They immediately called for assistance.

A volunteer rescuer from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation said the man stepped on the wooden cover, which then broke, causing him to fall. Oxygen levels inside the well were low, requiring rescuers to use oxygen tanks to search for the victim.

The body, identified as a male aged around 55-60 years, was retrieved and sent for examination.

Regarding the tragic incident, the Governor of Bangkok Chadchart Sittipunt expressed condolences to the man’s family.

He said the tube well belongs to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority’s electrical conduit project. The district office notified the agency concerned to repair the cover, which was not completely closed three weeks ago.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will coordinate with the relevant agency to provide compensation for the family of the victim. -819 (TNA)

AYUTTHAYA, May 3 (TNA) – Following the fire at an illicit chemical warehouse in Phachi District, Ayutthaya Province, residents continue to face repercussions as the lingering strong chemical odors have rendered it unsafe for them to return home.

The incident, which occurred on May 1, prompted the evacuation of all 35 patients from the Phachi Hospital to other areas, as it was located only 600 meters away from the warehouse.

The Phachi Subdistrict Municipality has instructed residents residing in close proximity to the incident site to temporarily evacuate, also advising those experiencing illness to seek treatment at the field hospital until Phachi Hospital can resume services.

A local resident near the warehouse recall previous instances of chemical smells and occasional fires, promptly reported to the municipality for extinguishing. However, on the day of the incident, smoke and flames erupted in the evening, compelling her to hastily evacuate her daughter to relative’s home before undergoing health screenings at the field hospital yesterday.

Another resident, unable to tolerate the stench, opted to stay at the field hospital, set up at a temple urging authorities to swiftly remove the chemicals. Given the past knowledge of hazardous substances stored nearby, residents have been living in constant apprehension.

The Department of Pollution Control inspected the environmental quality surrounding the burned chemical warehouse and found a significant amount of heavily polluted acidic water, posing a risk of contamination to the surrounding areas. Samples of soil and water near the warehouse were collected for assessment, aiming to provide expert recommendations for appropriate management and ongoing remediation efforts.

Moreover, traces of chlorine gas and ammonia, hazardous to the health of nearby communities, were detected. The Phachi Subdistrict Municipality advised residents within approximately 200 meters to evacuate to the temporary shelter at Kok Muang Temple, which has been available since May 1.

The warehouse, holding 4,000 tons of chemicals pending legal proceedings, comprised five buildings, with Buildings 4 and 5 being the ones engulfed in flames. After the fire was under control, minimal chemical smoke and odors persist, necessitating ongoing monitoring and fire control measures in the area.

The Governor of Ayutthaya Province convened a meeting to discuss strategies for disposing of the 4,000 tons of chemicals. It was decided to prioritize the disposal of chemicals in Warehouses 1-3 first, transporting them for treatment. As for Warehouses 4 and 5, damaged by the fire, an inspection and categorization of the chemicals will be conducted before engaging experts for disposal, slated to commence in June and expected to conclude by September to October.

Minister of Industry Pimpatra Wichaikul, along with her team, on Thursday visited the site to monitor the situation and follow up industrial waste management solutions, providing essential supplies to over 100 affected residents. The Ministry apologized for the incident and assured the public of expedited chemical disposal efforts.

It is initially believed that the fire at the chemical warehouse was possibly an act of arson to destroy evidence, she ordered stringent surveillance by provincial industrial authorities and relevant agencies for fear that unscrupulous entrepreneurs may view Phachi District as a precedent for similar disposal activities. – 819 (TNA)

SURAT THANI, May 3 (TNA) – A French woman shot herself dead in Surat Thani, leaving her estate to her Thai housekeeper, who had worked with her for 17 years.

The incident occurred on April 29. Police from Koh Samui station investigated the shooting at a residence in Koh Samui district, Surat Thani province.

At the scene, a pool villa, the body of 59-year-old Catherine, a French national, was found with a gunshot wound to the left temple, with the bullet exiting on the right.

No other injuries were found on her body. A firearm was found next to the body. No signs of burglary or theft were found inside the residence.

CCTV footage from the house on April 28 at around 11 am showed the French woman sitting at a desk, using a laptop, before using a glass cleaning wiper to tilt the security camera down. It was captured as the last image before her body was discovered.

According to the investigation, the woman had been living in Koh Samui for more than ten years with her French husband, but they had no children. Later, they divorced and she suffered from cancer, which is believed to have led to her decision to commit suicide.

Nattawalai Phupongta, or Aunt Tim, the housekeeper from Sakon Nakhon province, revealed that she had worked for Catherine for over 17 years as Catherine invested in a resort and villa business.

On April 28, Nattawalai went to clean Catherine’s house as usual, with the employer wishing her a happy birthday before Aunt Tim left the villa. On April 29, someone came to inform that the employer had been shot.

Police found that before the woman decided to commit suicide, she had made a will in front of a lawyer, bequeathing all of their assets, valued at over 50 million baht (some media reported 100 million baht), to her maid.

Nattawalai found the message on Line from her employer sent before the incident.

She said Catherine had already transferred money for wages, internet fees, water, and electricity bills, as well as transferring 500,000 baht to her for funeral expenses. She promised to organize the funeral excellently and would never forget Catherine’s kindness. -819 (TNA)

CHONBURI, May 2 (TNA) – The Deputy Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade instructed the Chonburi commerce office to conduct inspection of a made-to-order food shop with the pricing of two fried eggs with rice at 70 baht (about 1.8 USD) per plate.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade, Udom Srisomsong mentioned a case where a consumer was charged 70 baht for a plate of rice with two fried eggs in Pattaya.

Preliminary observations indicate that although the menu lists fast food items with an average price of 70 baht, it is seen as unfair to charge two fried eggs with rice, the same price as a fast food item at 70 baht each.

The food shop also fail to clearly display prices. However, the results of the inspections by the provincial commerce authorities who have been on the ground today must be awaited, he said.

If deliberate wrongdoing is found, legal action will be taken regarding product and service prices. Penalties include fines of up to 10,000 baht for failure to display prices and imprisonment for up to 7 years or fines of up to 140,000 baht for overcharging. Investigations will be based on facts and evidence.

Citizens who witness unfair practices at any shops can immediately file complaints at the hotline 1569. -819 (TNA)

CHUMPHON, May 2 (TNA) – The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has explained the cause of warped railroad tracks in Nakhon Si Thammarat due to the extreme heat.

The situation has necessitated temporary halts to train services for cooling measures to be applied to restore the tracks and allow normal operations to resume.

According to images and text circulating on social media regarding the railroad tracks between Ron Pibul Station and Khao Chum Thong Junction, the tracks appear warped on April 30.

These measures are required to counteract the effects of the intense heat and higher-than-usual temperatures, which have caused expansion and stress within the concrete sleepers supporting the tracks. As a result, the tracks have become misaligned.

Officials from the SRT Engineering Division have sprayed water and used ice to alleviate the heat, a process that took approximately one hour to complete. Subsequently, the tracks returned to their normal state.
Simultaneously, inspections were conducted along the entire railroad line, and crusted stone used for the track ballast was added to maintain track stability and safety.

However, due to the current hot weather conditions, the steel tracks are prone to expansion according to engineering principles. To address this, SRT regularly inspects track conditions with its engineering team. -819 (TNA)

KRABI, April 30 (TNA) – More than 280 blacktip reef sharks were spotted at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands, indicating a thriving marine ecosystem in the southern sea.

A recent survey, conducted by marine park officials in Trang province, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and the Thai Sharks and Rays team, aimed to monitor the population and behavior of blacktip reef sharks in Maya Bay, part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi province.

Using aerial photography and drones, the team counted the blacktip reef shark population and installed underwater cameras to observe their behavior.

Preliminary findings revealed a significant increase in the blacktip reef shark population compared to previous surveys, with a staggering count of 281 sharks observed on April 23. In a previous survey on January 22, 126 blacktip reef sharks were counted.

This marks the highest number recorded in years, indicating the robustness of marine resources in the waters of Maya Bay. The data collected will undergo further analysis to guide conservation efforts.

Blacktip reef sharks are slender-bodied sharks approximately 50 centimeters in length, characterized by a wide mouth and distinctive black markings on their dorsal and caudal fins. They primarily feed on small fish and marine invertebrates, foraging at night and seeking refuge among coral reefs during the day. Unlike other shark species, they exhibit non-aggressive behavior and tend to gather in groups near the coastline, occasionally venturing into estuaries or even shallow waters as deep as one foot. -819 (TNA)
