Banpu Public Company Limited, reported operating results for the first quarter of 2024 with a total sales revenue of USD 1,088 million (approximately THB 38,810 million)

The post Banpu reveals 1Q/2024 results. appeared first on The Story Thailand.

Banpu Public Company Limited, reported operating results for the first quarter of 2024 with a total sales revenue of USD 1,088 million (approximately THB 38,810 million), while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) totaled USD 250 million (approximately THB 8,924 million) and net profit of USD 43.5 million (approximately THB 1,552 million). Despite the fluctuations in global energy prices, the Company managed to improve its operational and cost efficiency, generating a consistently strong cash flow. Banpu’s gas business has moved full steam towards Net Zero with a new Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) project in the United States, which is set to begin operations this year, while its Energy Technology business is moving forward as its battery plant in Thailand has started delivering battery packs to a local customer.

Sinon Vongkusolkit, Chief Executive Officer of Banpu Public Company Limited revealed that “In the first quarter of 2024, we continued to focus on improving operational efficiency and stringent cost management, while optimizing operations of all groups of businesses in the nine countries where we operate and enhancing resource management capacity to sustain the ability to consistently generate cash flow. Our Energy Resources and Energy Generation business groups continued their production optimization and cost reductions in response to the impacts of energy price fluctuations. Our Energy Technology business group has made significant progress as its battery plant in Thailand has successfully delivered the first batch of battery packs to a customer. In addition, we have continued to optimize our business portfolio in line with our GHG emissions reduction strategies through capital expenditure rationalization for sustainable growth.”

The operating results for the 3 core groups of business in 1Q/2024 are as follows:

    • Energy Resources – The Mining business acceleratedimplementation of cost-saving initiatives, increased production and logistics efficiency which helps minimizing processing time and waste and executed marketing strategies to meet the product requirements of customers, resulting in a strong cash flow. The Gas business leveraged financial mechanisms (hedging strategy) to mitigate risks associated with natural gas price fluctuations. As for Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects in the US with the commitment to achieve Net Zero across Scope 1 and 2 by 2025, the first project “Barnett Zero” operated as planned while the second project “Cotton Cove” is set to start operation in 2024, each with an average annual carbon storage capacity of up to 210,000 and 45,000 metric tons of CO2e, respectively.
    • Energy Generation – The Thermal Power Generation business achieved operational results as targeted and continuously maintained optimized productivity, with positive factors driven by growing electricity demand in many regions, especially the electricity power from reliable thermal power plants that can secure the electricity distribution system to accommodate demand during variable weather conditions. Additionally, there is a growth in the use of AI and data center businesses in various countries. The Renewable Power Generation business in China, Japan, Vietnam and Australia delivered good operational results and maintained a steady cash flow amidst unfavorable weather, which was a seasonal condition.
    • Energy Technology business continued to generate strong growth by focusing on expanding the customer base and seeking new investment partners. Battery & Energy Storage System Solutions: BESS – The lithium-ion battery plant established in a partnership between Banpu NEXT and SVOLT Energy Technology (Thailand) has started commercial operation and delivered more than 20,000 packs of batteries to a customer in Thailand, with a total production target of 60,000 packs per year. The two companies also signed a new strategic cooperation for the development of energy storage and related battery businesses such as battery cells and battery recycling.

DP NEXT, another battery plant through a joint venture between Banpu NEXT and Durapower, has delivered the first batch of batteries to Cherdchai Motors Sales for use in electric buses, with a target total production capacity of  1 gigawatt-hour. In addition, the phase II of the “Infinite Cafe Powered by Banpu NEXT” project was launched at Chamchuri Square. The pop-up café equipped with an off-grid electricity generation system with a solar rooftop and batteries for storing energy from sunlight, was introduced as a smart energy business solution to showcase the power of renewables in meeting the demands of people’s lifestyles with the aim of expanding the customer base to the service sector.  Regarding District Cooling System project at Government Center Zone C, it is expected to be fully operational in the 4th quarter this year.

As a result of remarkable human resource management and development strategies put into practice, Banpu won three awards from the Employee Experience Awards 2024 organized by Human Resources Online, Singapore, comprising a silver in the Best Management Training Programme category, a silver in the Best Holistic Leadership Development Strategy category, and a bronze in the Best Executive Coaching Programme category. These recognitions reflect Banpu’s commitment to being a lifelong learning organization that holds human resources as its most valuable asset.

“Banpu will continue to grow our energy portfolio by continuing our roadmap to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. My top priorities are to generate stronger cash flows from asset optimization across all groups of businesses by leveraging digital technology and AI to maximum outcomes, along with expanding revenue-generating opportunities by opting for investments with high returns. We can achieve this by synergistic integration of existing businesses and new businesses with growth potential in both the energy sector and the industries beyond energy sectors, while accelerating the reduction of carbon emissions from business operations in order to drive the world towards a low-carbon society,” Sinon said.

The post AIS and partners host a forum elevating Thai Creators appeared first on The Story Thailand.

AIS organizes the Global Creator Culture Summit, featuring world-renowned Professor David Craig, a leading social media scholar from the United States. The event unveils global coach growth figures, emphasizing the communication context in the new world. It gathers ecosystem partners and top Thai Creator, revealing inspiration, secret formulas, and tips to foster creator into professions capable of sustainable and robust growth.

Pratthana Leelapanang, Chief Consumer Business Officer at AIS said “As the developers of the country’s digital infrastructure, apart from the goal of delivering experiences and technologies to Thai customers and people, we are also ready to support various tools and connect knowledge and skills for all types of entrepreneurs in line with the Ecosystem Economy. This includes particularly supporting Content Creators, who are crucial drivers of the economy, society, culture, and serve as focal points for global context changes from every angle. This is the rationale behind organizing the “Global Creator Culture Summit”, where besides the privilege of hosting esteemed global scholars like Professor David Craig, one of the world’s leading social media scholars from the United States, to provide valuable insights for Thai Content Creators, we have also invited top Thai Content Creators and stakeholders involved in driving Thailand’s Creator Culture ecosystem to exchange ideas on this platform.”

Professor David Craig stated, “Today, creators are influential individuals who serve as the primary drivers of the global economy. They have the potential to act as their own ‘brands,’ community builders online, and generate income through various channels such as O2O (online-to-offline) from their own spaces, platforms, and other channels. They also contribute to the economic value of other industries, driving the development of various services and features on mobile phones, which are crucial for the growth of the telecommunications industry.

    Creator underestimate value

This confirms that creators are the focal point for creating economic revenue on platforms and related ecosystems, estimated to be worth about $7 trillion globally. For example, the Wanghong Culture or internet celebrities in China, who wield significant influence in the online world, have propelled the growth of social commerce dramatically. In China, anyone, even agricultural workers, can become renowned influencers because they are supported to become Wanghong creators. Therefore, I believe that through the exchange and research efforts in this event, we can identify clear pathways to create an economy from global creator cultures, shaping the future and direction of the global economy and society together.”

The “Global Creator Culture Summit,” organized by AIS and its partners, took place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 The event featured numerous experts exchanging knowledge, inspiration, and success tips for becoming creators. Speakers included:

e27, tech and startup media platform, announces the launch of Echelon X, Southeast Asia’s premier tech and startup conference. Happening from 15 to 16 May at the Singapore EXPO, this milestone 10th iteration helps startups forge new business connections, unravel new business opportunities, and create a deal flow of new investments across  Southeast Asia’s tech ecosystem and beyond.

Echelon X aims to foster tech ecosystem resilience through deeper collaboration, knowledge-sharing, business matching, and collective innovation. Over the two-day event, the speakers will be sharing their insights across topics tailored for mature startups such as AI, sustainable growth, agile business practices, business resilience, and future-proofing.

Anchored on Echelon’s mission to supercharge Southeast Asia startup ecosystem, there will also be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between e27 and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Group on 15 May at the Pitch Stage. This agreement aims to catalyse growth and innovation within the region’s startup ecosystem by leveraging e27’s extensive media reach and NTT Group’s regional presence. Through this agreement, startups and tech companies will receive robust support, increased visibility, improved access to capital and enhanced networking opportunities.

The TOP100 program continues to be a staple at Echelon alongside the main conference. The curated growth program is established for startups across the region to gain visibility, mentorship, and funding opportunities. For the first time, the TOP100 will also see participants from outside traditional Southeast Asian borders, from India, Bangladesh, and Taiwan.

The 51 shortlisted startups will be participating actively at Echelon X through their exhibition booths and will have an opportunity to showcase their ideas on the Pitch Stage – the platform for participants of the TOP100 and other groups of startups to present their innovative solutions to the wider audience. Recent data from the ‘Singapore Venture Funding Landscape’ report reveals that Singapore-based startups accounted for 63.7% of all equity deals in 2023 when compared to the rest of Southeast Asia, with a significant increase in deep tech deals.

“It is our utmost privilege to be able to organise the Echelon conference year after year”, said Mohan Belani, CEO and Co-Founder of e27. “Over the past decade, we have seen the tech ecosystem growing exponentially, with Echelon being the must-attend conference for all things tech and startup. We have seen many revolutionary founders take the stage and showcase their innovative solutions to the world, and are excited to see what the future will bring, especially with the rise of disruptive technologies, new generations of founders, and strong support from ecosystem partners.”

We have organized intensive marketing activities such as events, music journeys like MRT Music Journey, fan meet activities, as well as exclusive rights and various ongoing promotions. These efforts continuously stimulate purchasing power, draw in funds, and strengthen the business for our tenants.

The “METRO MALL Feel Good Food Aroi: Yummy No Matter the Mood” concept at MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre Station stems from an understanding of the needs of MRT passengers and people in the surrounding area. Leveraging the station’s prime location, which serves as a central hub connecting to significant landmarks such as national-level event centers, hospitals, and large condominiums, the area attracts a diverse crowd, including office workers, businesspeople, and expatriates. Furthermore, the front area of METRO MALL already serves as an event space, allowing for easy circulation of shops to create variety and attract attention. However, the absence of medium and large-sized markets in the vicinity means there’s a lack of diverse food options that adequately meet the demand. Therefore, establishing this Food Hub aims to increase options for MRT users and nearby residents significantly.

The Food Hub will become a new rendezvous point for food lovers in the heart of the city, operating as a Rotating Food Market concept with daily rotation throughout the year, serving a variety of hearty, delicious meals, desserts, and accessible beverages. It aims to bring happiness every day, serving tasty meals from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

In the initial phase, we will partner with Gourmet Market, a large-scale supermarket specializing in food retail, to create the Food Market. We’ve invited certified vendors to participate from May 9th to 31st, 2024. We are collaboraing with street food vendors known for their famous menus, alongside tenant shops, all gathered in one place.

The offerings included a variety of delicacies such as Zabway, Thai curries and rice, mango sticky rice, traditional grilled pork, Shanghai chicken rice, Chester’s grills, fried dumplings, and smoothies, Waraporn Salapao, YoksodBaitoey, as well as Thai desserts like fresh coconut cake, GOA, Sunny Side, Choux Cream, Macaron, and more. Additionally, we featured bakeries like Chubby Dough, Kanom Bakery, Donut, Ja-pan bakery, and Cacao Cocoa serving homemade butter grilled ice cream and drinks, along with Madame Marco and Deliya for cakes and pastries. White Story offered a mix of food and baked goods, while Papa Tofu provided soy milk and orange juice. Lastly, Lawson 108, on-site. We organized numerous promotional activities, including discounts, and giveaways, aiming to create excitement, increase foot traffic, and enhance the appeal of MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre Station.

Additionally, BMN is actively seeking out new spaces within the MRT system to host innovative events that cater to the increasing interests of the community. The aim is to create fresh collaborative experiences that bring maximum benefits to MRT users, space tenants, and society as a whole. It is anticipated that new campaigns will be launched soon.

  • SOPA announces 2024 Journalism Awards Finalists

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), a Hong Kong-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to pursuing excellence in journalism, today announced the finalists for the SOPA 2024 Awards for Editorial Excellence

The post SOPA announces 2024 Journalism Awards Finalists appeared first on The Story Thailand.

The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), a Hong Kong-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to pursuing excellence in journalism, today announced the finalists for the SOPA 2024 Awards for Editorial Excellence (full list here). Global, Regional, and Chinese media outlets submitted more than 700 entries in English and Chinese and a separate category of Bahasa Indonesia.

This year marks the 26th consecutive year of the awards, which were first held in 1999. Winners will be announced Thursday, June 20 at an awards dinner in Hong Kong.

Joseph Kahn, a former China correspondent and past SOPA winner who is now executive editor of The New York Times, overseeing all aspects of The Times’s global newsroom and news report, will be the featured speaker. A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Kahn will talk about his priorities for maintaining editorial independence in an age of polarization.

Awards will be given out across 21 categories spanning Women’s Issues, Audio Reporting, Investigative Reporting and Business Reporting and a lot more in between. Several publications who made the finalists list benefited from an entry-fee subsidy for small media outlets or first time entrants. Among those are China Books Review in the global opinion writing category; India’s ThePrint for regional women’s issues; Master-Insight.com for Chinese-language opinion writing; and Magdalene.co in the Bahasa category.

As one of the cohort of 135 volunteer judges —comprised of former and current journalists and journalism academics from around the world— summed up this year’s awards: “From story choice to execution, this is one of the best sets of stories I’ve seen in a long, long time. I hope we continue to have an audience for this kind of journalism.”

Public health was a top theme of coverage, including the fallout from substandard medical syrup made in India and China’s role in the global supply chain of fentanyl.

Public policy in the world’s two most populous nations —India and China— was also a popular topic. Grabbing headlines in India —currently boasting the world’s largest population— was how the nation is trying to raise incomes and improve living standards. Meantime, worries are growing about the weakening of some democratic institutions like the press and the judiciary. In China, the leadership’s propensity to put national security ahead of economic growth drew attention, as well as the country’s unfolding real-estate crisis and the rivalry between the U.S. and China over the procurement of advanced technologies.

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre at The University of Hong Kong, known as JMSC, has administered the SOPA Awards since 2011.

“SOPA’s status as Asia’s pre-eminent journalism awards is attested by this season’s shortlist, which shows an unprecedented level of diversity and depth in terms of reporting range and reach,” said Ting Shi, Senior Lecturer at HKU who acts as Head of Judges for the awards.

“We’ve also seen an increasing trend of collaborative journalism in the region, where news organizations team up and work together to tackle transnational and cross-discipline topics; media outlets of various sizes and in different places get to play to their specific strength in an encouraging collective journalistic endeavor for the sake of public interests.”

Rita Widiadana, a veteran Jakarta-based journalist and executive board member of the Asia Pacific Media Alliance (APCAT) for Health and Development, is Head of Judges for the Bahasa Indonesia category, which honors stories that set the domestic agenda in politics, business or social/cultural affairs.

“This year’s shortlist captures the evolving geopolitical landscape, as well as the complexity of the region. We extend our thanks to everyone who submitted their outstanding works to the awards, and we look forward to honoring the winners and finalists in June,” said Yi-Shan Chen, Editor-in-Chief of CommonWealth Magazine and co-chair of SOPA’s Editorial Committee.

  • Datacloud APAC: Charting the Course for APAC’s Cloud Future

BroadGroup's Datacloud APAC conference took place in Singapore this week, marking it one of the largest and most important gatherings for the Asia Pacific of leaders in the digital infrastructure industry.

BroadGroup’s Datacloud APAC conference took place in Singapore this week, marking it one of the largest and most important gatherings for the Asia Pacific of leaders in the digital infrastructure industry. The event attracted over 270 attendees to participate in the two-day conference.

The region’s growth is driven by the rapid adoption of cloud storage solutions, a growing demand for low-cost data storage, and an increased need for faster data accessibility across various industries. Moreover, the Asia Pacific region is seeing a push towards innovative cloud technologies, influenced by the rapid digitalisation of businesses and the increasing internet penetration.

Mayank Srivastava of BDx Data Centres opened the conference with a keynote speech describing what data centres in the APAC region face. Followed by a panel discussion, there was much buzz around the challenges of navigating and preparing for increased demand, especially in finding the capacity to power data centres. Powering data centres is becoming an increasingly pressing issue because they are estimated to account for up to 3% of global electricity consumption today, with projections suggesting this could increase to 4% by 2030. The average hyperscale facility consumes enough electricity annually to power up to 37,000 homes. This level of consumption is prompting greater governmental scrutiny and regulation, especially in regions facing energy and water resource pressures.

“The average density of data cloud centres is increasing, with current demand being AI,” said Mark Fong, Chief Executive Officer of Empyrion Digital, a member of the panel session alongside other industry-leading operators.

As cloud adoption spreads across more industries (BFSI, healthcare, retail, and government), there was also discussion about how to scale data centre construction. In building new data centres, more consideration is being given to Sustainable Cloud Solutions, especially in light of the amount of power it takes to incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. The combined electricity use by major companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta, huge consumers of these services, more than doubled between 2017 and 2021, reaching around 72 TWh. This trend is expected to continue and grow.

“Customers demand pragmatic sustainable solutions. They are operating with a global view and we as DC providers need to work with them on meeting their green requirements. Clarity and transparency are essential,” said Matthew Benic, the Head of Commercial, Data Centres & Networks Division, Keppel.

The rise of IoT and the need for low-latency processing are driving the growth of edge computing. Speakers discussed how this is particularly relevant in the APAC region, where large populations and fast-growing tech markets create a high demand for real-time data processing.

Other issues the sector is grappling with centre around security and privacy, regulatory compliance, cost management and who is funding data centre development, as well as performance criteria, including the complexities of maintaining high availability while balancing load. For example, the demand for interoperability and data portability between cloud providers is essential but can incur significant costs or operational delays.

Another critical issue is the war for talent. Skilled professionals who understand cloud architectures, security, and regulatory requirements are in short supply, which can hinder the deployment and management of effective cloud solutions. Speakers discussed ideas as to how to grow a pipeline of talent, the merits of cross-training, and whether adjacency hiring could overcome skill set matching.

Overall, the conference went exceedingly well, with participants commenting on how much they enjoyed interacting with like-minded professionals who are grappling with the same issues.

“Events like Datacloud APAC 2024 are a great networking opportunity. Although competitors, we (in the industry) realise that everyone is facing the same common problems. What events like this can do is bridge the gap between private sectors collectively and attract and develop conversations with regulators to tackle critical pain points that are limiting the scale and potential of the data centre industry,” said Hisham Muhammad, Head of Client Solutions Engineering Asia Pacific, Yondr, a visitor to the event.

Many who travelled far to attend the event found value in doing so. Samuel Jones, a student who journeyed from abroad, expressed his enthusiasm stating, “This is my first time attending a datacloud event, and I’ve gained invaluable insights from both the stage events and networking opportunities with industry experts. The panel sessions provided a deep dive into the scaling, cooling solutions, and power requirements of data centres. Hearing directly from operators was truly eye-opening and offered a perspective that simply can’t be replicated in a classroom setting.”

Speakers at the conference represented leading brands including BW Digital, Digital Realty, Empyrion Digital, GDS International, Equinix, Exyte, Keppel, Neutra DC, Princeton Digital Group, STACK APAC, and ST Telemedia Global Data Centres.

“This was the first time in a number of years that the Datacloud APAC event has taken place in Singapore,” mentioned Liss Boot-Handford, Head of Content for Datacloud. “The seniority of the attendees has been industry-leading for the region, with a focus on key decision-makers from the major Asian operators. We’re delighted with the turnout, and look forward to continuing to grow our presence in the region.”

Datacloud APAC 2024 was held 6-7 May 2024 at Voco Orchard Singapore. The second day set to deliver engaging content on the sector’s emerging technologies, sustainability, data sovereignty, and the future of data centres.
